DIABETES (E10-E14)

Diabetes (E10-E14) was the second leading underlying cause of death of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians in 2014. Diabetes accounted for 215 deaths or 7.9% of all deaths of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians. The age-standardised death rate for diabetes was 5.9 times higher for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians compared to non-Indigenous Australians in 2014 (89.9 per 100,000 and 15.2 per 100,000, respectively).

In 2014, diabetes was the second leading cause of death of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander females (120 deaths), and the third leading cause of death for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander males (95 deaths). It accounted for 9.6% of all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander female deaths, compared to 6.4% of male deaths. The sex ratio for deaths of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders due to diabetes was 79.2 male deaths per 100 female deaths.
